Jury selection is underway in the case of the New Canaan lawyer accused of trying to kill his ex-wife in 2010.
A judge denied John Michael Farren's appeal for a mental health defense last week.
Farren, who once worked as an attorney in the Bush White House, is representing himself.
Police say he beat his then-wife with a flashlight until she lost consciousness and then choked her.
The trial is expected to start next month.
