The community of Stamford on Sunday participated in "plogging” - picking up trash while jogging, in an effort to keep the streets clean and green.
In the Hubbard Heights neighborhood, some residents helped to clean up trash and debris as part of Keep America Beautiful's "Trash Dash."
The concept is simple, but one which goes a long way in keeping the community clean and green.
"When there's litter on the ground or in the streets, the next time it rains, that litter is going to go right into our waterways," explained Helen Lowman, president and CEO of the Stamford-based nonprofit Keep America Beautiful. "Masks, gloves, wipes, all the single-use items are being littered extensively."
She said the second annual event came at a crucial time.
"Eighty percent of the trash that's in the ocean is derived from on-land sources," said local resident Vicki Zacharewicz.
"Everything we do, not only affects us immediately here, but it affects the greater world," she added.
Organizers handed out "plogging" kits and T-shirts at the event.
