Stratford students revel in ‘Ice Cream for Breakfast’ tradition despite Micalizzi’s fire.
To celebrate the last day of school in Stratford, Micalizzi’s continued its “Ice Cream for Breakfast” tradition for students Tuesday morning, despite a recent fire that left its storefront devastated.
A line wrapped around the ice cream truck and down Main Street in Stratford.
"I got the cookie monster which is a blue ice cream and then I got it with gummy bears," said Justin Kienzle from Stratford.
"They're having such a great time and for [Micalizzi’s] to continue this in the midst of this kind of tragedy – it’s just amazing all around," said Nina Kienzle, of Stratford.
The fire broke out early Saturday morning on June 1. The fire marshal has now determined the cause to be accidental from smoking. Stratford fire says the fire started in the lower left corner of the building and spread to the roof. Officials say no one was injured.
Bridgeport and Milford fire departments assisted in extinguishing the fire.
"I am absolutely humbled by the outpouring of support from this community. It's put a big smile on my face. Yes, there's been challenging times for us. It's been a tragedy here but as the old saying goes, the comeback is going to be greater than the setback," said Micalizzi's owner Jay Piccirillo.
Piccirillo says he's not sure when Micalizzi's will reopen. There's lots of smoke damage inside, but he says the truck will be at that location this summer.
