On Friday, we said this game was going to be good! Somehow, it exceeded expectations. The Class LL state championship for high school baseball featured two of the best programs and pitching staffs. Gatorade Player of the year Hiro Wyatt of Staples and Fairfield Warde's Griffin Polley went toe-to-toe on the rubber for eight innings each. Polley struck out five, Wyatt nine.
In extra innings, Polley delivered the go-ahead RBI which would end up being the game-winning run as well. "We lost a couple games at the beginning of the season, and we had a setback. We lost the number one ranking, and then flipped the switch and turned it on from there," Polley said.
It's the second straight Class LL baseball title for the Mustangs, and their 16th straight postseason win. Head coach Brett Conner credited the tough competition his team had to face all year with helping them win the title. "We were battle tested all season long. We made sure we had the hardest schedule we could possibly put together, which allowed us to prepare for a moment like this. Being able to capitalize in the biggest moments... we were able to do that today"
Saturday was the first extra-inning state baseball final since 2016.
