Friends of a well-known Bridgeport musician shared stories Saturday – a day after he was killed in a three-car crash on I-95 near Exit 22 in Fairfield.

William Foster, known to many as Billy, was one of two people killed in the early morning crash. He was a veteran and the lead singer of the band Billy and the Showmen. He performed at local restaurants including the Black Duck Café, the Horseshoe Café and the Seagrape.

Several friends who spoke to News 12 Connecticut’s Angelica Toruno described Foster as legendary.

"He certainly was a larger-than-life personality," said Brian Curley, from Billy and the Showmen.

"Billy was instant electricity,” said AJ Lasala, the lead singer of Stomp Box Relics. "The greatest singer I ever knew."

Curley said he and Foster grew up together in Greenwich and played in the band together for the past 30 years. Lasala became close with Foster after seeing him perform.

"He was the one I think most people came to see, I was just lucky to be next to him,” said Lasala. "From that moment on, we became really tight and sang together whenever we could."

There's been an outpouring of love for the lead singer and Vietnam veteran on social media. For those who knew him, he will always be a shining light.

"He was just a wonderful, loving, caring kind of guy…a great musician, a great friend, fun to be around," said Lasala.

Foster frequently played at the Horseshoe Cafe in Southport. Many from the community are planning to gather on Monday evening to remember him the best way they know how – through music.
