Local lawmakers have begun reconsidering existing legislation that bans the use of devices with video displays, like some Global Positioning Systems.

State Sen. Bob Duff, of Norwalk, announced that he will be rewriting the law, which bars drivers from having video display screens within their line of sight. According to officials, the law is designed to keep drivers from watching portable televisions and DVD players, but could also be applied to some GPS devices that use moving images in addition to text.

Local police officers say they will not be looking to ticket drivers using GPS in their cars, though they say they will be vigilant of drivers who seem distracted.

Duff says the new version of the law will prioritize drivers' rights to use GPS devices.

"We want to make sure that people who are using a GPS in a legitimate way don't have the fear of getting a ticket," he says.
