The state Senate has approved a sweeping plan to lower electric bills by trimming the Public Benefits Charge.

Gov. Ned Lamont said the plan begins a broader effort to hold down electricity rates. "I think they'll reduce some other costs," he said. "It's the beginning of a process."
The legislation removes $800 million in Public Benefits Charges over three years. It also cuts renewable energy subsidies, shifting funding for hardship programs and EV chargers to long-term borrowing.
The House of Representatives could take up the bill today.
