Lawmakers drafted legislation to impose tougher penalties for election crimes Friday.
The legislation comes after videos allegedly showed campaigns for both Mayor Joe Ganim and mayoral candidate John Gomes stuffing absentee ballot boxes.
"This item is, what I hope will be, a new initiative this year in a bipartisan fashion to look at the penalties for violations of our election laws," says state Sen. Mae Flexer (D-Killingly)
It not clear what the new penalties would be.
Republicans say they want to go even further on the issue and remove all absentee ballot drop boxes.
