Two lawmakers are urging the state Legislature to keep parents in the loop by adding sex offender notifications to an e-mail alert system.
State Sen. Jeff Klein and Assemblyman Rory Lancman want the state to adopt legislation proposed by Klein two years ago. The measure would create a statewide e-mail notification system that lets parents know when a sex offender moves into the neighborhood.
The lawmakers propose that the offender alerts be added to the NY-Alert system, which is operated by the Department of Homeland Security. The current program sends out messages regarding flooding and other problems.
Klein believes adding sex offender information to the system would be useful to not only parents, but also teachers and others.
