In a News 12 update, the lawyers for two brothers who were beaten by their mother's husband, including one fatally, announced Thursday they are suing the State of Connecticut for a total of $100 million.
In September 2024, 6-year-old Jathan Escobar was fatally beaten with a metal bat by Abdulrahim Sulaiman inside their Bridgeport home.
Escobar's 4-year-old brother Eli was also seriously injured in the attack.
The Reardon Law Firm, who filed the lawsuit, claims the state failed to protect the boys from Sulaiman even though they were aware of his history of violence.
At the time of the attack Sulaiman was on probation for prior offenses. According to the lawsuit, Sulaiman was additionally required to "abstain from drug usage and violence against family members."
"It is difficult to understand how so many state employees, from so many state agencies and departments, knew for years that Sulaiman was a violent drug user and a risk to children, yet allowed the Escobar boys to remain in his care. Nobody put the pieces of the puzzle together and did what should have been done to keep them safe. Given Sulaiman's history, which the State knew about, this was bound to happen," attorney Kelly Reardon said in a press release.
