Legal experts have a warning about scammers who are targeting undocumented residents as a new immigration policy has taken effect.
Attorney Dennis Bradley says the scammers are sending letters and making phone calls to try and exploit people who have heard about the new Keeping Families Together Program.
The policy offers a pathway to temporary legal status for certain longtime residents in good standing with the United States.
"They call themselves 'notarios,' or notaries, and they pretend to be licensed legal experts in their field, and they are just simply not. So it's important for people to know that if someone fills out an application in your name, and you sign it, and that document is notarized, whatever fraudulent information is there will be held against, often times, the applicant," Bradley warns.
He adds that bona fide immigration experts will not promise to secure "temporary legal status" in exchange for money.
