There is a proposal at the state Capitol to pay collegiate athletes, such as UConn basketball standout Paige Bueckers.
The NCAA allows most Division I schools to enter in "revenue-sharing" agreements with players.
At the Capitol, the Higher Education and Employment Advancement Committee met Thursday to consider paying athletes.
University of Connecticut is asking for a change in state law in order to stay competitive.
"By, I believe, at the beginning of April, the landscape is going to change and there will be, in states that have approved similar legislation," said committee co-chair Sen. Derek Slap. "Then they will be able to enter into revenue-sharing agreements with student athletes."
UConn's men's team won last year's NCAA basketball championship while the women made the Final Four.
