A litter boom was installed on Rooster River in Fairfield on Tuesday morning.

The new environmental effort was made possible by the Town of Fairfield in partnership with Harbor Watch at Earthplace.

Officials say the floating barrier will capture litter carried by stormwater runoff before it reaches local waterways and Long Island Sound.

There was also a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday morning to celebrate the installation of the litter boom.

"It's high traffic, high use so we did notice the amount of floating trash and debris in this river in this section specifically,” said Tim Bishop, conservation director with the Town of Fairfield. “We saw the need right away and came together with a great partnership."

Bishop says the town also partnered with the City of Bridgeport and the DOT.

Harbor Watch is set to conduct biweekly inspections on the device and remove any collected trash.
