In an attempt to close its multimillion-dollar budget deficit, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch has confirmed that more people will be getting pink slips this holiday season.
The mayor acknowledged that nine members of the Laborers International Union of North America Local 200 were laid off last Friday with the possibility of 60 more before the end of the year.
?The last thing a mayor wants to do in the Christmas season is lay people off,? says Finch.
The mayor stated that the teamsters, social workers, painters, printers and police unions have all reached agreements with the city assuring that there would not be any layoffs.
Local 200 members, who reportedly work in middle management, are still in negotiations.
?I [would] urge all labor unions that haven?t reached an agreement with the city to reach one as soon as possible,? says Finch.
