NFL player Derwin James Jr. of the Los Angeles Chargers delivered the University of Bridgeport's undergraduate commencement address Saturday.
Thousands attended the ceremony held at Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater, where diplomas were awarded to undergraduate and graduate students.
James, a safety for the Chargers, gave his first commencement address and received an honorary degree, a Doctor of Humane Letters.
"I'm 28 years old and the message that I'm sharing is just keep betting on yourself, always believe, you got enough of what it takes and don't ever let no one tell you what you can and cannot do," he says.

James tells News 12 he is interested in investing in education, affordable housing and youth development in Bridgeport.
