The holidays are in full swing at Makers Central in Tarrytown, a collaborative working space filled with artists making custom handmade goods for home and hospitality.
"There's a ceramic shop here, a knife maker, a paper maker, a woodworking shop, a concrete shop [and we've] got a florist in house," explained Stetson Hundgen, one of the co-founders of Makers Central. "That pool of members is always shifting and changing...We're an incubator space for the crafts of old."
Hundgen co-founded the space with Connor McGinn. As small business owners themselves, they have experienced the difficulty of getting any small shop off the ground and wanted to help others go through the process.
"I'm a potter myself…and it's really difficult to go from a maker to a business owner," McGinn explained. "We found there were a lot of other makers in a similar position who needed a space…So we started this place to help small maker businesses turn their craft into a business."
One of those businesses is "Bat Flower Press," where owner Natalia Woodward turns trash into paper treasure that can be used for various items like greeting cards or restaurant menus.
"All my paper is compostable," she explained. "I only use natural dyes to color the paper and I only use soy-based inks."
As their holiday market draws near, the crew is ready to share their work with the community, something they look forward to doing every year.
"There's something for everyone," Hundgen said. "From kids to parents to aunts and uncles and grandparents, we always try and bring something unique to the markets and make it more of an experience rather than just a place to go shopping...We always have so many new faces coming in, but to see so many old faces come back and say that it's their favorite place to shop for the holidays, it really warms our hearts."
"We're in such a nice, small, tight-knit community," McGinn added. "You see a lot of great interactions between neighbors and friends who haven't seen each other for a little while and get to kind of reconnect in this space."
Makers Central is located at 84 Central Ave. in Tarrytown. The team will be holding their holiday market Dec. 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Dec. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Makers Central will also be participating in Tarrytown’s "Winter Stroll" on Saturday.
