Every Thursday, we take you to different towns and cities in our area to showcase all they have to offer this week in Main Street, Connecticut, we are in Fairfield News 12, Connecticut's Mark. Sudal begins with Fairfield's Museum and History Center. Mark Good morning, Becky. Yeah, there's so much to see here in Fairfield, Michelle Chang with the museum is joining us this morning to tell us all you have to offer here. A lot of history, tell us about some of what's here. Sure. We have our main gallery which has more than 400 years of history on display, starting with the PCO War, moving through Bridgeport History, suburban History for Fairfield and inter present day. We also have our historic properties open throughout the summer where you can explore some of these stories in person and uh throughout every Saturday this summer, I think it's cool too. Even on some of the adjacent property show the Burr Mansion, right? And, and the John Hancock story is fascinating to me. Absolutely. And there's also connections to the American revolution here we have Sun Tavern which is built circus 1780. It was one of the first buildings rebuilt after the British came through and Fairfield was burned. Wow. A lot of folks didn't know that including myself. The John Hancock connection is what he got married there. Yes, he married Dorothy Quincy. At what is now the Burr mansion. So his John Hancock is in the guest book. I would hope so. So now I know you have a lot of events going on here, some special things going on on Saturdays. tell us about all those things. Sure. Um So every Saturday we're offering a lot of family friendly activities so folks can come down and there's an early childhood play space in our Victorian cottage. We have arts and crafts. Um And occasionally we'll have larger events that are meant to uh engage people with our current exhibitions this summer. And you kind of showed us as we walk through kind of a, a spring, a spring ish uh exhibit that you have here. Sure. So we have um one of our exhibitions on view this summer is called pioneering conservation and it traces the stories of advocacy and um really important work in our community for conservation. And so six organizations were featured including Connecticut, Audubon, Asma Land Trust, et cetera. And I know you get a lot of school visits here obviously as well. What are your hours? So we are open actually every day from 10 to 4 except for a few major holidays. So plenty of opportunity visit throughout the summer and throughout the year really. Um, but yes, we have quite a few school groups going through. This is actually our final week wrapping up as the school year ends. Well, hopefully you have some help because it's tough for one person to manage all of this. Yes, we have a great team here. Um, not to be gruesome at all, but, uh, we have the burial ground next door. I know you told us a bit about that, but, uh, we gotta go great to talk to you. Sud all joins us. Now he's made a stop along the way at Raleigh's Drive. Mark. Hey, Becky, I've been waiting for this one. I can't tell you all week because I love the chili dogs here. We're here with AJ. He's the man he's been owning this place now for four years. This place has been around forever since the forties. What makes this place so iconic? You know, it's just nostalgic. It's, uh, people have memories here. They carve their names in the wall. They grew up here. A lot of people have moved away but they always come back whenever they're in town, they stop in to say hello when they're visiting their relatives. Uh, it's just been, it's proved the test of time. It's been 80 years of hot dogs here and burgers and fries. Yeah, I mean, yeah, let's, let's get this out there. It's not just hot dogs, just hot dogs and we have a lot of other things on the menu also. Yeah. But, but the hot dogs are special because why? Well, they're humble hot dogs. So they're locally sourced out of New Haven, Connecticut. They're fresh every day we get them delivered. Our buns are uh New England style hot dog bun that we butter and toast both sides that toasted bun in that humble hot dog, which is deep fried is the real key to uh Raleigh's success. And you've got a lot of national exposure. Tell us about that national exposure. Uh We've done uh Food Network. We've cooked on Food Network. Uh We've done the Martha Stewart Show. Uh The View uh the Talk two summers ago. Uh CBS talk and a lot of local radio stations too. Wow. I love what you're doing. Hey, I gotta try this hot dog here before we go. I mean, look, I know it's gonna be delicious. Get a little chili and mustard on this one. I think some onions too. 00, Beckham. I'm laughing because I know I know you've been waiting for that hot dog ride. I've been waiting for, I'm taking this with me. I know it looks delicious. We'll see you at soccer. We are in Fairfield News 12, Connecticut's Mark Sudal just had a chili dog at Raleigh's Drive. Now it's time for dessert. So I understand you've headed over to Suck Sweets. Yeah. The words right out of my mouth. Becky. Yeah, we're here at Suck Sweets with Al who uh has been here now for 10 years. Tell us uh all you have to offer here. Well, sou sweets here at Fairfield is uh has been around for 10 years and we have candy and ice cream. Some of the greatest candies, greatest ice creams around, but it really has become a center p place inside the Fairfield community. We love the Fairfield community. It's a community filled with parents with young kids. And what we've tried from the very, very beginning of opening here is not only just to sell ice great ice cream and candy, but to create memories, all kinds of memories for these kids. So they remember when they grow as they grow up that they went to the local ice cream store and they had fun and you know, you can buy ice cream in a lot of different places. But when you come to so sweets is a memory. We joke around with kids. We have a lot of fun. We do all kinds of contests. We do watermelon eating. We've done dung tanks. We, we try to be as active as we can with the community. There isn't a charity that does come for us, whether it's boy scouts, girl scouts, local baseball teams that we don't allow to go out front raise money. We just had a group from Fairfield Odyssey of the mine raise $1500 outside. So we tried to be a anchor inside of uh Fairfield community and, and bring joy and happiness to people, both the parents and the kids. And over the years, of course, we've spoken to you about Al's Angels. Tell us about that. Right? So Al's Angel has been around for 25 years, started 25 years ago in my garage. And after I had uh a kind of a close encounter with parents who had lost their Children sadly to cancer and rare blood diseases. And God spoke to me and said, you know what if we're you, what if it was your family? I have three healthy Children and seven health, healthy grandchildren. And it, it haunted me to the fact that we had to do something. And you know, we said at the very beginning hour. What do you want? Do you want to change the world? I said no, I just want to help those families that are battling this because they've been wiped out financially to have them have good holiday seasons. So we provide Thanksgiving meals, Christmas meals, Hanukkah meals to 3 to 4000 families within the tri-state area. Then we do toy drives in the last 5 to 10 years. We've averaged about 20,000 toys through the tri state area in those toy drives. So, it's something that's very, very near and dear to my heart. Did I ever lose? You know? Thankfully, no, I never lost anyone directly to cancer or rare blood disease, severe financial hardship, but I never felt there was a lack of my responsibility as a human being, as a member of this human family to do something. I thank you. I've got to eat your ice cream here before we go. Enjoy. Oh, this is, uh, the mounds, coconut mounds and pistachio. Unbelievable. Get over here. I'm surprised you held out that long. Oh, I'll be over there, you know, it. Have a great time.
