A new way to combat food insecurity was unveiled Thursday in Norwalk.
Food Rescue US and the Community Health Center Inc. partnered to create a community refrigerator located inside the center's location on Day Street.
The refrigerator will be open on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and will be stocked with fresh and locally sourced foods that were donated by the public.
It’s free to all city residents, who can take as much or as little as they need.
The center's staff say it's important to them to support their patients and larger community, especially because access to healthy food can be a challenge for many people.
"As a nurse practitioner this really just makes my heart so happy. To be able to say to a patient we just talked about diabetes and high blood pressure and your worth now go to the fridge so you can get some vegetables and fruit that you can bring home and share with your family. I feel like we're really putting that education into action and that's what we want-we want to make it as easy as possible for people to live healthy lives," said Nicole Seagriff, vice president of Community Health Center's western region.
