A man is in custody after a domestic disturbance in Newington that ended in a barricaded incident in Stamford Sunday afternoon involving various law enforcement agencies.

The Newington Police Department said officers responded to an undisclosed location for the reported domestic disturbance at 12:10 p.m.

Authorities said an investigation revealed that 36-year-old John Lacen-Romero had assaulted a woman at the residence. They say he then removed two children from the home, placed them in a vehicle and left the area.

Newington police said it then coordinated with other law enforcement agencies to locate the vehicle and ensure the children's safety.

The Stamford Police Department said the suspect vehicle led its officers in a pursuit that involved "numerous vehicle accidents." The vehicle then entered I-95 southbound and exited at Exit 7 where it crashed into another vehicle and became disabled.

Numerous agencies, which included the Special Response Team (SRT), Hostage Negotiation Team, state police and Newington police, worked with the barricaded suspect inside the vehicle at North State Street and Canal Street for hours since 1:45 p.m.

Stamford police said the SRT then "took deliberate action due to the overwhelming concern for the two children in the vehicle."

Newington police said Lacen-Romero was taken into custody and the children were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Newington police said Sunday night that additional details and information on charges would be released as they became available.

The department also thanked Stamford police, state police and the other agencies "for their swift response and assistance."
