Man in his 80s is first to die from flu virus this season in CT
A man in his 80s has become the first person to die from the flu virus during the 2025-2026 respiratory viral disease season, the Department of Public Health says.
Officials say the man was between 80-89 years old, lived in Hartford County, and died the week of Oct. 25.
DPH says COVID-19 is the most active virus circulating in the state but it has leveled after a spike earlier this fall. The flu and RSV remain low, but both cases of both are expected to increase in the next few weeks following Thanksgiving.
During this respiratory viral season, there have been seven COVID-19 deaths and zero RSV deaths.
"As we approach Thanksgiving and the holidays, more people gather together and spend more time indoors. If you haven't gotten your seasonal shots, it's not too late to protect yourself from potential serious complications and protect our most vulnerable," said Manisha Juthani, MD., DPH commissioner.
Officials say the most vulnerable include infants, older adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.
DPH recommends that everyone six months and old receive an annual flu shot. Their current guidance recommends everyone six months and old get an updated COVID-19 vaccine.
Anyone over 60 along with pregnant people are eligible to receive a RSV vaccine.
People can receive vaccines at their doctor's office, a pharmacy or at a vaccination location.
Practicing proper respiratory virus etiquette such as handwashing, remaining home when sick, disinfecting surfaces and wearing a mask can prevent the spread of the flu, COVID-19 and RSV.
