The city is expanding its speed cameras initiative by installing additional devices at more school zones.
Over the next two years, 140 speed cameras will be installed near schools throughout the city. Currently, there are 20 cameras in operation near schools as part of the Vision Zero program, which is aimed at eliminating pedestrian fatalities.
Drivers caught speeding in a school zone will face a $50 fine. The city says since January, 183,000 violations have been issued to people caught speeding in school zones.
Mayor Bill de Blasio held a press conference Tuesday on the initiative outside P.S. 95 in Riverdale. The intersection outside the school is a high-crash corridor, so the Department of Transportation says the location will be one of the zones to have cameras installed.
City officials say being struck by a car is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 14, and the second leading cause of death for seniors.
A Bronx resident told News 12 that they hope the risk of a fine for violating the speed limit will motivate drivers to slow down in school zones.
