The mayor's plan to level the financial playing field for all Bronx and city schools is getting a failing grade from some educators.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R-NYC) wants to end major funding disparities between comparable schools in the same borough. According to Bloomberg's State of the City address, the city sometimes spends thousands less to educate a student attending school only a few blocks away from another student. Bloomberg wants to give facilities with poor, special education and ESL students more money. He believes it will allow them to attract better teachers.

However, the United Federation of Teachers union says the mayor will punish high-performing schools at the expense of low-performing institutions. The union says it will fight the plan.
