Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch is calling for the quick passage of a new state law that would ban people convicted of corruption from running for elected office.
The move comes as a reaction to former state Sen. Ernie Newton, who was convicted of corruption charges on Friday.
As News 12 reported, jurors found Newton guilty on three counts of campaign finance fraud.
Newton was also previously convicted for taking a bribe, where he received a five-year prison sentence.
Finch says that the state needs a law to fight public corruption.
State lawmakers are expected to vote on the pending public corruption measure during this legislative session.
