Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim says the city will be taking "immediate steps" this week to prevent a second wave of COVID-19 cases.
The mayor announced Sunday, "If the number of positive COVID cases continues to increase, the city will have to reinstitute stricter guidelines that have now been relaxed."
Ganim met with state health officials Friday and says he will begin announcing the steps the city will be taking on Monday.
"We'll be coming out with public announcements as to adjustments that may need to be made," he says. "We're in the yellow right now…we all know, like a traffic light, that's a warning sign. Surrounding towns…some are in the red. We don't want to be in the red. We want to take precautions and be ahead, or at least keep pace with this COVID virus, as it may enter this second phase."
Ganim is urging residents and businesses to observe all of the safety protocols already in place, including social distancing and wearing of masks in public.
Meanwhile, a Bridgeport middle school announced it will close on Monday after a COVID-19 case was found there.
Superintendent Mike Testani says Blackham School will be closed for extra cleaning.
He says the person who tested positive was last inside the school on Thursday.
The district says contact tracing is still underway.
