A Milford mom who lost her daughter almost four and a half years ago is trying to raise money to start a camp in her daughter's honor.
Donna Cimarelli's daughter, Maren Sanchez, was stabbed to death inside Jonathan Law High School. This Sunday would have marked her 21st birthday, and Cimarelli wants to continue her daughter's legacy.
Cimarelli has launched a GoFundMe page called
#21forMaren to raise money to start a camp that will help empower girls physically and emotionally. She is asking people to donate $21.
Cimarelli says teens would get self-defense training and learn self-awareness to recognize situations before they turn violent. She hopes it will prevent what happened to Sanchez from happening to other women.
"I want to get this camp going so a mom and dad can send their daughter somewhere for a week in the summer and know when they come back that it could potentially save their life," says Cimarelli.
The camp would be an extension of the foundation Cimarelli formed after Sanchez's death.
Cimarelli hopes to raise $21,000.
