Fay Vincent, the former Major League Baseball commissioner, passed away on Saturday in Vero Beach, Florida. He was 86 years old.

Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, Vincent later resided in New Canaan. He was not only known for his leadership in baseball but also for his athletic prowess, having served as the captain of the Yale football team.

Vincent took over as MLB commissioner in 1989 following the sudden death of his predecessor, Bart Giamatti. His tenure, which lasted until 1992, was notably marked by the Loma Prieta earthquake that interrupted the 1989 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants in the Bay Area.
