A Bridgeport woman whose son was killed in a deadly mass shooting in June spoke out Thursday to thank police.
Belinda McNeil thanked the Bridgeport Police Department, which arrested two men in connection with the murder of her 37-year-old son, Savonnie McNeil, of Shelton, at Trumbull Gardens in Bridgeport on June 11.
Police say Jamal "Moo Moo" Hamilton and Levan "Web" Bennett were arrested Tuesday in connection with the incident. They are facing murder, assault and weapons charges.
Authorities say the shooting occurred in an outdoor common area of the Bridgeport complex. They say a group of shooters parked behind the complex, surrounded the parking lot and opened fire from all directions. Nine people were shot, including Savonnie McNeil, who was hit by stray bullets and died at the scene.
Belinda McNeil says her biggest fear was that her son's murder would end up as a cold case, so she was relieved when police told her they had charged the two suspects.
"There's a lot of cases I see over the years that never get solved. You know I just appreciate it so much all the hard work that they really did," says McNeil.
