A moment of silence was held Monday to remember the 28 construction workers killed at Bridgeport?s L?Ambiance Plaza 20 years ago. The workers were crushed by huge slabs of concrete at the construction site on Washington Avenue. Family members of those killed in the apartment complex accident say the pain of losing their loved ones is just as fresh now as it was when the incident occurred. Paula Gill, who lost her father in the accident, is saddened that her daughter and her daughter?s cousin will never get to meet their grandfather.
?He didn't get to play with these two great kids and you know he left a big hole in all of our hearts and my mom?s too,? Gill said. The disaster brought to light problems with lift-slab construction, a technique widely used at the time. It prompted a federal investigation, and changes were made within the construction industry.
