A Bridgeport man and his family are trying to come to terms with a new reality after he was critically injured in a motorcycle accident.
The family of 34-year-old David Arroyo tells News 12 Connecticut they are still reeling 10 days after Arroyo lost the lower part of his leg after being struck by a car while driving his motorcycle through Bridgeport.
Arroyo is the sole supporter of his wife and children. He is now being fitted for a prosthetic leg and trying to come to terms with his new life as an amputee.
His mother, Jacqueline Arroyo, says she is still in disbelief.
"Oh my God, this has been one of the toughest moments of my life," she says. "And I have been through a lot. But this is so hard, especially when I got that phone call."
Arroyo will soon be going to a long-term rehab to learn how to walk again. He says he does not want this crash to ruin "the rest of my life, being in shelters and my family split up over this one situation."
The family has set up a fund to help David and his family as he adjusts to his new disability.
"I would take any donations, small or big, it would be very appreciated," says Arroyo.
