Freezing rain is expected Friday night as a front approaches New Jersey.
During the day Friday, expect sun and clouds with highs in the low-40s.
Later, air temperatures will be hovering just above the freezing mark in most - if not all - towns across the Garden State. This will allow the precipitation to fall as rain, but it could freeze on impact with the ground, especially on untreated surfaces in the hills.
A total of 0.1 inch of ice is possible in some spots, and more likely in Warren and Sussex counties. Freezing rain will typically leave a coating of ice on trees, power lines, and vehicles. This can also impact pedestrian paths such as ramps, railings, and stairs.
Ice like this can be very difficult to identify at a glance, so please exercise extra caution when taking those first steps outside Saturday morning or overnight.
It is suggested to delay travel until after 9 a.m. Saturday morning as some roads can freeze, too. Bridges, ramps, and overpasses can freeze faster than ground-road surfaces. This is because the air can flow under and above the road, which removes the heat faster.
As a result, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Somerset, Morris, Passaic, Bergen, western Union, and western Essex counties.
Light rain and drizzle continue for Saturday midday and afternoon as temperatures gradually warm into the upper-30s and 40s.
An unusually milder surge of air comes through for Sunday with highs near 60 degrees. There may even be a few sunny breaks after a brief morning batch of rain near 7 a.m.
Thunderstorms are possible overnight Sunday into Monday, too.
Temperatures remain mild through at least Tuesday with the last round of rain arriving overnight into Wednesday - just in time for the New Year!
