National Distracted Driving Awareness Month kicks off with increased enforcement

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has kicked off its high visibility enforcement campaign for National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

More law enforcement officers will be out on the road enforcing distracted driving laws. Tickets for distracting driving range from $200 for a first offense to $800 for a third.

Officials say there are a few things drivers can do to stay safe on New Jersey’s roadways.

If a driver must use a phone, they should pull over to a safe location before using it. Ask a passenger to be the “designated texter.” Drivers should not use social media while driving and should activate their phone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature.

Research shows millennials and Gen Z are the most distracted drivers.
