Greenwich residents were positive they saw a tornado touch down Wednesday and the National Weather Service finally confirmed their sightings.
The National Weather Service says the tornado contained winds in excess of 120 miles per hour, which classifies it as an F2. The twister knocked down trees and power lines, which blocked access to major roads. Residents say they are still stunned by the extent of the damage.
The weather service says less than 10 percent of all tornadoes reach wind speeds as high as the Greenwich twister. Weather officials say this was the first tornado to hit southwestern Connecticut since 2000.
