NBC to air controversial Megyn Kelly interview of Alex Jones
The gun control group Sandy Hook Promise has uninvited NBC News anchor Megyn Kelly from an event it's sponsoring in Washington next week over an upcoming interview on the network.
Relatives of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting have been criticizing Kelly for interviewing the conspiracy theorist and "InfoWars" host Alex Jones.
Jones has repeatedly said he believes the worst mass murder in Connecticut's history was a hoax.
The family of first-grade teacher Vicki Soto, who died in the attack, has led the criticism on social media.
Relatives posted an open letter to NBC saying they are disgusted and disappointed with the decision to air the interview to meet the network's alleged "incessant need for ratings."
They say Jones and his followers have made their lives a living hell for the last four and a half years. One of those followers showed up to the annual Vicki Soto charity race and was arrested for harassment.
Soto's sister Jillian Soto is arguing that airing the Jones interview will give him a broader platform and strengthen other conspiracy theorists.
"Vicky is as real as it comes to me," she says. "To have a person say that she didn't exist, or that what happened at Sandy Hook didn't happen, is a slap in the face."
Kelly, a former Fox News anchor, says it's her job to "shine a light" on the truth. She has described Jones as "revolting" but is asking viewers to watch the entire piece before making judgments of their own.
Jones has also asked NBC not to air the interview, but he is arguing that his views were misrepresented. He posted a 17-minute rant about it on his website Tuesday.
The interview will air this Sunday, Father's Day.
