Two New Canaan High School students have been recognized in a state contest for their videos about road safety.
They want people to know just how important their messages are as we approach Memorial Day weekend. State officials say Memorial Day to Labor Day marks the most dangerous time of the year for teen drivers. They call it "The 100 Deadliest Days."
Students at New Canaan High School are doing something about it to promote safe driving. Seniors Maggie Marshall and Victoria Fromzel produced award-winning videos in this year's CT DMV-Travelers Teen Safe Driving Video Contest.
"Mine is a super emotional video about a mother who loses her daughter to reckless driving. It's devastating. I've witnessed a lot of these crashes unfortunately. I haven't been a part of them, but it's absolutely heartbreaking," says Marshall.
"I put myself in the situation and thought what would happen if I was distracted driving," says Fromzel.
Out of 120 entries across the state, these two girls produced two of the best videos.
"I'm very excited for the two of them to have that honor," says their teacher, Jennifer Sinski.
Sinski says the two students received Visa gift cards while the school got a $4,750 check. But the students say they did the videos to save lives.
"We all are behind the wheel, and we all need to be very aware of the decisions that we make when we choose to get behind the wheel," says Sinski.
Students at Wilton High School also produced award-winning videos.
