The deadline to get your Real ID looms, but as New Jerseyans scramble to get the elusive appointments, could there be other options? Some people, including Mark Williams and his wife Mary Cohen-Williams, are wondering what to do as the May 7 deadline approaches. "It’s so hard, they tell you to do it online, they just send you to one place or another place. I went to Springfield - they sent me here. They said that you have to go back," says Cohen-Williams. After much running around, Cohen-Williams and Mark Williams, of Union, still turned up empty-handed coming out of the MVC in Rahway. They did leave with more instructions on how to schedule an appointment online for a Real ID. "I don’t even know if I really need one because I have a passport," Cohen-Williams said. Cohen-Williams is right, she doesn’t need a Real ID, right now. In the meantime, she can use her passport for both domestic and international travel, but it will also get her into federal facilities. "We do a lot of traveling. I don’t want to be stuck anywhere, when we’re trying to get this taken care of," Williams said. Those who can’t get an appointment for a Real ID can get a Passport Card instead as a valid alternative to a Real ID. People can apply online or head to their local government office. The card is a wallet-size, plastic ID that shows proof of U.S. citizenship - and it’s good for 10 years. The TSA accepts a Passport Card for domestic flights, along with land and sea entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The Passport Card will also give people entry to federal buildings. To apply, people will need an original birth certificate or naturalization certificate along with a driver’s license and $65 for an adult and $50 for children under 16. It takes about four to six weeks for normal processing and two to three weeks for expedited service. Expediting will cost also an extra $60 per application.
