Newark man convicted in 2024 domestic violence assault

A Newark man was convicted of aggravated assault in connection with the 2024 strangulation of his girlfriend, prosecutors said.
Kevin Simms, 43, was convicted of aggravated assault — strangulation of a victim of domestic violence — and disorderly persons harassment, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
The jury returned its verdict March 23 following a three-day trial.
Prosecutors said the assault occurred Feb. 27, 2024, at a home Simms shared with the victim and a roommate. Authorities said Simms punched the victim in the face, dragged her off a bed and placed her in a bear hug before the roommate intervened and separated them.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to University Hospital for treatment.
Simms is scheduled to be sentenced May 5 and faces five to 10 years in prison, prosecutors said.
