Some of the busiest streets in Newark’s Ironbound District are closed this weekend for the return of the annual Portugal Day festival.

Organizers say Newark is New Jersey’s oldest Dia de Portugal celebration. This year marks the 46th year in the city.

The red and green of the Portuguese flag was seen all over Peter Francisco Park, along with live concert performances and the smell of traditional dishes.

One of the tents that drew the biggest crowd featured retired greats from FC Porto showing off the Champions Cup.

The current team will begin training at Rutgers this week for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

Portugal Day is celebrated on the weekend nearest June 10. It is a tribute to the poet Luís de Camões, who died on that day in 1580.

The festivities continue Sunday, rain or shine, with a 5K race and parade.
