An elderly Norwalk woman died Saturday while cleaning up from the latest winter storm. Patricia Smith?s Colonial Village apartment was surrounded by 5 inches of snow. Smith?s daughter says her mother had a kidney dialysis treatment and needed to get her car out of the driveway. After building maintenance did not respond to Smith?s needs, she and her son decided to shovel out the car. With half of the driveway cleared, Smith collapsed and suffered a heart attack. Edward Schuster, a cardiologist at Stamford Hospital, says shoveling snow is the most dangerous activity a person can do. Schuster says, ?If you don't exercise regularly and you are out of shape, you should not shovel snow.? He suggests breaking up the snow, shoveling a little bit, taking a rest and then doing it again. Smith was a Norwalk Democratic moderator and longtime volunteer. She was also honored as a News 12 Connecticut Hometown Hero.
