Norwalk drivers who don't pay tickets to get the 'boot'
The City of Norwalk introduced new technology Thursday that targets drivers with multiple unpaid parking tickets.
The new technology comes in the form of an electronic ?Smart Boot? that can be placed on the wheels of various vehicles. Boots are nothing new, but the new Smart Boot lets drivers remove the device themselves ? once their fines are paid.
A camera mounted on the roofs of buildings scans license plates, which are cross-checked in a computer system to identify drivers who have outstanding tickets. Repeat offenders then get booted. Drivers can pay their fines over the phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Smart Boot targets drivers with at least three unpaid parking tickets. A Smart Boot representative said the system is not designed as a punishment, but as a business process to collect fines.
