Democratic Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling and his supporters celebrated election results at his campaign headquarters as he won a third term in office Tuesday.
They gathered at the Hilton Garden Inn on Main Avenue and cheered the voting outcome. Rilling said he gathered about 55 percent of the vote, which he described as a mandate. But he also acknowledged that he had to pay attention to the 45 percent of voters who chose other candidates.
"Our community is a wonderful diverse community of people," he said of his fellow Democrats before adding, "we need to address everybody's needs."
He also called on council members to work together.
His campaign manager, Jesse Hubbard, said the 15 minutes after polls closed at 8 p.m. are usually the "longest 15 minutes" in the campaign managers' and candidates' lives.
"We hope for good results," he said. "We plan on good results. We put in a lot of work."
The work, apparently, paid off, and Rilling thanked and praised supporters.
Rilling was previously chief of police in the city for 17 years.
