Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws,” the original summer blockbuster, terrified movie-goers across the nation in June 1975.
Half a century later, people are still wondering if it's safe to go back in the water.
"It was scary!" Steve Brill, of Stamford, says. "We grew up going to the beach all the time, so I don’t think I went swimming for a couple years after that."
Hundreds of “Jaws” fanatics — decked out in their favorite “Jaws” gear — packed the Westport Country Playhouse Monday night for a chomp of nostalgia.
The playhouse held a special 50th-anniversary screening of Spielberg’s classic.
“There's nothing like seeing this movie with people," artistic director Mark Shanahan says. "Even if you’re swimming in a swimming pool, all you need to hear is someone saying duh-duh, or you’ll think something is right below you."
The screening is part of a series of “Jaws” events being held in Westport this summer.
The playhouse will host a play-reading of “The Shark is Broken” next Monday, which delves into the backstage shenanigans of what happened during the making of “Jaws.”
“I really believe that in another 50 years from now, we’ll be having a 100th-year screening," Shanahan says. "There are some movies that actually stand the test of time, and I’m sure that this one will be one of them."
