A baby was resuscitated just in time by a police officer in a Kingsbridge apartment.
Police say Officer Johnny Castillo responded to a call about an unconscious 2-month-old baby Tuesday afternoon at East 196th Street. He found the baby, Adelyn Pena-Fernandez, blue and unresponsive when he arrived. Castillo acted quickly, giving her four light chest compressions and within seconds, she opened her eyes and began breathing again.
Castillo's colleagues are calling him a hero, saying that his quick action saved the baby's life. Castillo is also an Army ranger who served in the military for 10 years, doing tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has two purple hearts and a presidential citation personally awarded by President George W. Bush.
Despite his army experience, Castillo says nothing compares to how he was able to rescue baby Adelyn.
The baby was transported to Montefiore Medical Center, where she is listed in stable condition.
