Officer accused of killing dogs, possessing explosives ordered to surrender 31 dogs that were seized

A New Canaan police officer accused of killing dogs and keeping illegal explosives at his Naugatuck training facility was ordered to hand over 31 dogs during a court hearing in Waterbury Wednesday.
A judge ordered David Rivera, who owns Black Rock Canines, to surrender the dogs. The dogs were seized during his arrest.
Rivera and former general manager/trainer Daniel Luna were arrested on numerous charges after police say they found evidence of animal abuse and illegal possession of dangerous explosives.
The investigation began after state animal control officials received numerous complaints of animal cruelty and illegal killing of dogs.
Rivera is accused of directing staff to shoot at least 10 dogs in the head and then bury their bodies on the training school's property.
The court Wednesday required him to sign away legal ownership of 31 other dogs already seized by police.
Connecticut animal advocates with Desmond's Army say pet owners should ask questions before trusting their animal to any board-and-train facility.
Rivera's K9 partner, Apollo, was also revoked as part of his suspension from the department.
Rivera is due back in court on July 13.
