State Attorney General William Tong and Sen. Richard Blumenthal announced new consumer protections for airline passengers.

The protections include cracking down on surprise junk fees, more state power to investigate and enforce abuses by the airlines and to refunds in certain cases.

"There's now a DOT refund rule so if you're unreasonably delayed or your flight is canceled, you're entitled to an automatic refund for a domestic flight delayed for three hours, for international flights it's for a delay of more than six hours," said Tong.

Tong and Blumenthal say these new protections stemmed from hundreds of complaints from frustrated travelers.
