A Connecticut prison guard is facing an assault charge after he allegedly struck an inmate during an altercation last August at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution.

State police say Christopher Carlson hit the inmate several times in the face while he was on the ground being restrained.

They add that the use of force was neither "reasonable or appropriate."

Carlson turned himself into state police.

He was released on a $5,000 bond.
