Memorial Day weekend is typically a big time for people to get out on the water, but officials want people to think about safety before they do so.
Police say the recent death of a kayaker from the area serves as a reminder that even if it feels warm out, the water can be dangerously cold.
At Fairfield Town Hall Tuesday, First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick issued a proclamation that this is Safe Boating Week, which includes kayaks, jets skis and even stand-up paddle boards.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary will be at the South Benson Marina this weekend to talk about safety and it has a safety class scheduled for June 18.
