A Bridgeport police commissioner and his staff went door to door in the city's West End Thursday to educate immigrants living in the country illegally about their right to obtain a driver's license under a new state law.
Commissioner Simon Castillo, who is also the pastor at Good Shepard Christian Church, is trying to get out the message that those driver's licenses will be available on Jan. 1. Castillo met Thursday with a group of workers in the country illegally, who he says agreed to show their faces on camera thanks to what they say is the feeling of friendliness created by a new state law.
He says the law gives them the right to drive legally without having to worry about being deported as a result.
City Councilwoman Lydia Martinez says it is a complex process, however, for residents in the country illegally to apply for a license. She says meetings have been held for about five months in order for officials to fully understand the law.
Castillo will hold a free educational seminar about the new law at the church on Saturday. He says the seminar will be held in Spanish, and aims to encourage attendees to share everything they learn with friends and family.
