Local, state and federal officers teamed up for a training exercise in Bridgeport, but happened upon a real crime in the process and seized $20,000 worth of drugs.
Police discovered a box that was left unattended in a stairwell on the Port Jeff Ferry around 6:30 p.m. Friday.
That prompted authorities to clear the area and call in the state police bomb-sniffing dog. But what the animal found was more than 4 pounds of high-grade marijuana ready to be sold on the streets.
Officials say someone was transporting the drug to Bridgeport, but when that person saw the officers engage in a training exercise, they got spooked and dumped the drugs.
Police say they are looking at surveillance video.
