One man was hospitalized, but is expected to recover, after a shooting Sunday night in Fairfield, police said.
It happened around 10:35 p.m. on Fiske Street, which runs between Commerce and Johnson drives. Police were called there by people living nearby who reported hearing several “pops” and thought they were gunshots.
“While on scene, officers discovered several spent shell casings indicating that there was in fact a shooting that took place in the area,” Sgt. Evan Kaesmann said.
There wasn't a victim or signs of one. Then came a call from Bridgeport Hospital which had just admitted a man with a gunshot wound.
“Detectives and officers went to the hospital where they confirmed that this individual was in fact involved in the incident that took place on Fiske Street,” Kaesmann stated.
Kaesmann told News 12 the department occasionally has calls for shots fired, but shootings—with a person hurt or worse—are rare.
“I think that the easy access to the highways sometimes has a lot to do with it because it's maybe seen as a pass through,” he explained.
Fiske Street is only about 400 feet long. One side is residential with half a dozen houses. The other side has a few businesses, including a towing company, an auto shop and a doggy day care – all of which were closed when the shooting happened.
But there’s a commuter parking lot on Johnson Drive, where Fiske Street ends and right nearby, the entrance to I-95.
“We know that there were two vehicles that left the scene, but as far as descriptions, we don't have anything definitive at this time,” said Kaesmann.
Police would not disclose anything about the victim or a possible motive. News 12 noticed several security cameras and doorbell cameras in the area.
“One of our most helpful tools, no matter where it is—whether it's this Fiske Street incident or anywhere else—is going to be residential cameras. Those actually are very beneficial to us. That is part of our fact-finding investigation at this point,” Kaesmann explained.
According to News 12’s archives, the last shootings in Fairfield were about two years ago. In July 2022, Zion Burton, 15, of Bridgeport, was killed at a teen’s birthday party at a church banquet hall on Kings Highway East. In June 2020, police responded to a shooting at Wafu Asian Bistro on the Post Road, which injured one person.
