A fire in Kingsbridge sent firefighters scrambling to rescue residents trapped inside their apartments Tuesday afternoon, leaving 15 people injured — many of them children, officials said.
The FDNY said the fire broke out after 3 p.m. on West 234th Street, where flames and smoke blocked the only escape route for some residents inside the building. Video from the scene shows a neighbor waving for help from the third floor windows as they tried to get the attention of firefighters below.
Firefighters raised ladders and climbed several stories to reach residents trapped inside their apartments on Kingsbridge Avenue, helping bring them to safety.
Officials said a daycare operates inside the building, and several children were among those hurt. All 15 injuries were reported to be minor.
